What Does Organic Food Certification Really Mean?

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

By Jeanette Joy Fisher The term "organic" is being tossed around quite a bit lately, and you’ll soon be seeing a big jump in the number of organic choices when you visit your local Safeway or Wal-Mart store. That’s because the demand for organic produce, milk, and meat has been steadily increasing, to the point where the giant retail chains have begun to take the trend seriously. In turn, there will be a growing concern over the certification process as factory-style farms begin to muscle their way into the organic food market as a result of increased demand. In 2000, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) established what were supposed to be clear guidelines for gaining organic certification, but various ambiguous areas will continue to confuse consumers until those guidelines are made even more clear. For instance, under USDA rules, growers of fruits, vegetables, meat, and milk are forbidden from using most synthetic pesticides or fertilizer in food production. They’re also prohibited from using genetic engineering, irradiation, or sewage sludge. To be certified organic, livestock must be fed nothing but certified organic feed and can’t be given any sort of growth hormone. They must also be allowed to be outside at least a portion of every day, though the rules for what that actually means have been open to serious dispute over the past few years. The USDA guidelines were meant to be fairly all-inclusive, but there are a number of gradients, as well. Here are some of the labels you’ll see in your local co-op or supermarket:100% organic: For produce, this designation means that fruits or vegetables were grown completely without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. In the case of meat or milk, it means that all the USDA stipulations concerning hormones, feed, and time spent outdoors were met.Organic: This type of produce or meat doesn’t quite meet the highest organic standard, but the remaining 5 percent of its ingredients have been approved for organic use by a nationwide certification organization called the National Organics Standards Board.Made with organic ingredients: This certification assures consumers that no less than 70 percent of the produce, milk, or meat was produced using organic ingredients. The last two other labels you’ll see are considerably more ambiguous. First, there’s the term "free-range," which is used interchangeably with the term "cage-free." The USDA regulates the use of either term when it comes to poultry, but not to eggs, and there’s no clear definition of how much outdoor access animals should receive. The other term is "natural," which has no real meaning in any food commodity other than meat and poultry, which can’t have any artificial coloring, chemical preservatives, or ingredients. Although it’s supposed to have only minimal processing, there’s no certification process that meat or poultry producers must comply with in order to place the term on their labels. As the market continues to grow, you’ll be seeing these labels more and more. What remains to be seen is if the USDA will tighten or loosen the process in order to allow producers to meet the growing demand for organic products.Copyright © 2006 Jeanette J. Organise to Beat the Winter Blues

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

By Andrew Leatherland If youre a Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) sufferer or you just feel down each winter its all too easy to think that nothing can be done about it. Even if youre close to a sufferer youre affected. You hope that by hunkering down for the winter youll ride it out because its an inevitable problem that you cant avoid. Its true to some extent that you cant avoid it because youre fighting your own biology to do so. However, the degree to which you suffer it is not inevitable. You can have your best winter yet. The success guru Jack Canfield wrote If you keep doing what you always did, youll get what you always got. This rings true for SAD & Winter Blues sufferers. By doing what you always do in winter its highly likely you will experience the same rough ride that you have for previous winters. By changing your approach to winter, you and those around could be a lot brighter and a lot more energetic than previously. The first thing you have to do is decide to change your approach. Like smoking, drinking or gambling breaking a cycle needs people to make a conscious decision to change. Where your mind goes the rest of you will follow. The second thing you need to do is change your approach to everyday life. So much of what we do in life is habit. We tend to just do what weve always done. We drive the same way to work, eat the same food and so on. With this condition, not changing your habits to fight it will put you at its mercy. One simple exercise you can do to see the power habit has over your life is to sit down for twenty minutes with a piece of paper. Over the twenty minutes write down everything you do day by day. Look back and youll probably see patterns emerging put children to be, eat dinner, sit down, watch TV etc. Now dont throw this list away because youre going to need it. You dont need wholesale change. Changing on a massive scale is difficult to achieve and is likely to result in failure. Thats like New Year Resolutions to lose weight through crash dieting, or deciding to get fit by running a marathon. They are such massive changes to the system that you cannot keep them up. What you need is to identify a series. So how do you make that change? Well you plan and you organise. If done right your life wont look radically different day to day. You can build some small but powerful changes into your everyday routine. But you must plan and you must follow through on the plan. Also improve your chances of success by working the plan into your everyday routine. Plan where to put your light therapy and plan your medication in consultant with your Doctor if youre a SAD sufferer. Plan to use your lunchtime at work to talk a short walk in the daylight. Plan your meals so they include nutrients that help maintain greater energy levels when you need it. Also plan your food so it includes the kind of ingredients that help lift your mood. What should be important in the planning process is that there are a series of actions each day that are slightly different from normal but that have an emphasis on fighting the symptoms of these conditions. More importantly they should be things that you can slot into your everyday routine without upheaval to you or your family. Plan to beat it and action that plan. You can be so much better for it. With the small steps highlighted here and by starting right now next March you should be able to look back and reflect on a much improved winter Andrew Leatherland runs the resource website for SAD and Winter Blues sufferers and their families. http://www.freewebs.com/winterblues The site has just opened a forum where everyone can come to discuss the condition and their experiences as well as seek support. Cell Phone Deals, With No Credit Check

Friday, May 9th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Eric_Morris]Eric Morris If one has to go in for a cell phone plan that is based on billing systems, one has to undergo a lot of scrutiny. Since this is more or less like a credit that the cell phone company is offering its user, the credit history of the individual is checked to find out whether the person has a good history of paying credit. It becomes very difficult for someone who has a bad credit history to get a good cell phone deal for himself. The option for such people who have bad or no credit history or those that do not want their credit histories to be checked is to go in for prepaid connection. This is one of the best ways of beginning to use a cell phone and understanding the nuances of both the cell phone usage and the cost pattern of one’s usage. There are no credit checks required with most cell phone companies that give prepaid connection. One can just pay for the upfront money to get the phone and connection and one can get the minutes loaded into one’s phone and one is ready to go mobile. Besides this, the other advantage of a prepaid connection is that there is also no deposit that is required on such a phone. There are also no monthly rentals required to be paid for using the prepaid services of a cell phone company. If someday one decides not to use the services of a cell phone company, one can choose to forgo the mobile connection and no termination fees will be charged from the user. Apart from this, since one can use the phone only till such time that it has credit on it, one cannot excessively use the phone and cause one’s costs to go up exponentially. Thus one’s budget on making calls is in control and one can make amends to the same depending on how much one has already spent on the phone. Prepaid phone deals are best for those people that do not plan to use mobile phones extensively and those that have a bad credit history. Abatement Concession Can Spell Disaster

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

By Lance Winslow Most fire agencies have abatement procedures and rules to prevent problems of all sorts. When these rules are broken or individuals are able to slide from these rules it can mean disaster for them and their personal property, even their lives. Often those with political clout are able to skirt the law of abatement and when this is done it complicates disaster response teams and first responders. In fact in the case of a wildfire where the homeowner did not to remove the dried brush up to his home and then a large wildfire comes near it is often too late and the same person with political clout will insist that the fire department protect their home, yet this jeopardizes the fire department and the team and could cause death. Such linear thinking on the part of the homeowner who has to political clout and believes they are above the law may in fact cause them to lose their home and lives in the process. It is smart to follow abatement procedures that make sense and it is smart to go beyond those protocols when it makes sense as well. For instance if you have large trees around your property and they might fall in the case of a fire you will need to make sure that those trees are far enough away from your home to prevent it from catching fire. If not and if the fire is a strong fire there is a good chance you’ll lose the tree and the home. People should be smart in pre-planning for potential eventualities such as natural disaster wildfires. History has shown that those who were smart and prepare for disasters will likely be the ones with their homes still standing after the disaster passes. I hope you will consider this in 2006. “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board. How to Save Thousands on Student Loans Using a Loophole in the Federal Consolidation Program

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Chris_Studer]Chris Studer Most graduates don’t realize until it’s too late that there is a loophole in the federal student loan consolidation program that allows borrowers to lock in an interest rate that is 0.60% lower than standard repayment rates. Each year’s graduating class has a unique opportunity to take advantage of this loophole before it closes after the 6th month following their graduation. For students in the class of 2006, November marks the last opportunity to lock in their current low interest rate before it increases. Why consolidating during the grace period makes such an impact on savings The reason borrowers are able to save so much by consolidating college loans during the grace period has a two-part answer. First, the interest on a college loan during its six month grace period is up to 0.60% lower than when the loan enters repayment status. Add to this the current federal student loan consolidation rate guidelines that dictate the rate of the new consolidated loan using a weighted average of the current loan’s interest rates. Once college loans are consolidated, the lower repayment rate is fixed for the entire 10 to 30 year repayment period. How student loan consolidation helps borrowers If you miss the deadline, there are still ways to save with student loan consolidation. One of the benefits that many people say they enjoy most about consolidating student loans, is the ability to extend the repayment term from the standard 10 year period, up to as many as 30 years. By lengthening the repayment period, monthly payments are dramatically reduced. When payments are spread out over a longer period of time, students will pay more in interest over the lifetime of the loan. But many students say that without this option, making the monthly payments on their student loans would be a larger burden than they could shoulder. By consolidating student loans and extending the repayment period, borrowers can keep monthly payments low during the early years of their budding career. Should they choose to do so, borrowers can contribute larger payments as their salaries increase in the future. Most lenders don’t charge any pre-payment penalties, meaning the choice about how long it will take to pay back loans is entirely up to the borrower, no matter how many years they spread out their consolidated loan. Dont forget to factor in opportunity costs Though it would be ideal to have no debt at all, this simply isn’t an option for most people. New grads face a steep uphill battle. At this stage in life, graduates are juggling cash between buying homes, launching businesses, and starting a family. While a borrower could pay down their college loan in 10 years by paying $700 a month, rather than over 30 years at $258 a month, is it worth the opportunity cost? For those earning enough to do both, the choice to pay off college loans sooner might be more beneficial. But others who are forced to make a choice about how to leverage a tight income must decide what is in line with their ultimate financial goals. Instead of being forced to save around the student loan repayment, borrowers can choose a feasible monthly repayment amount, and then determine the number of years required to repay the loan at that amount using a student loan consolidation calculator. How to Save Even More with the PLUS Loan Consolidation Loophole PLUS loans, once only for parents of undergraduate students, are now available for graduate students to fund their own educations as a result of the Higher Education Reconciliation Act July 1st changes. PLUS loans experienced a rate hike in July, from 6.1% to 8.5% but there is a silver lining to this cloud through a loophole in the Act. Another one of the July 1st changes dictated that all consolidated loans would have a cap of 8.25%, a quarter of a percent lower than the rate of the PLUS loan. This means that any parent or graduate that has a PLUS loan will lower their interest rate, just by consolidating. PLUS loan borrowers can choose to extend the repayment period like any other federal student loan borrower to lower the monthly payment, but with this loophole, even if they make no changes to the 10 year repayment period, they will still save money just by consolidating. Just as before the changes, the process of consolidating federal loans is still free and requires no credit checks and no collateral. As always, federal student loan consolidation neatly wraps up all outstanding federal loans tied together with one fixed rate. So while the rate increase made big news last July, there are still plenty of benefits and ways to save money by consolidating student loans.
