This is another example of the “super bugs” that we are increasingly being threatened by in North America and Europe. During the program a number of pharmaceutical representatives as well as physicians were raising fears that these super bugs could get out of control if legislation is not relaxed to allow drug companies to produce more cost effective alternative antibiotics for treating these new strains. I need to say, that as a physician, who was taught to prescribe antibiotics during my medical training in the 1980’s I was acutely cognizant of the risks that over prescribing such agents could pose. Specifically, for those who don’t already know, the risk of creating and nurturing the proliferation of drug resistant strains of bacteria. Sure enough, now 20 years later we are seeing exactly what I and others recognized could happen, a crisis of global proportions that is threatening to envelop the entire globe. Although I find it unconscionable to see these drug company representatives and their physician supporters promoting the same solution (i.e. more and newer antibiotics) that caused the problem in the first place there is a more serious problem here There is deeper level to which we can take this matter and one which may help release the global population from the scourge of having to become guinea pigs for another mass antibiotic experiment. Let me explain. It is interesting how many choose to accept the faulty logic presented above by drug companies who employ the “fear of death” card to manipulate individuals into taking such toxic agents into their bodies (and please don’t take my word for it just look at the thickness of any physicians drug desk reference; over 90% of it listing potential drug side-effects) after contracting a bacterial infection. The fear of dying, in my view, is the very thing that is the foundation of the problem that created the super bug issue. It is this fear of death that leads many to lose their sense of judgment and ultimately winds up killing them. Interesting, isn’t it, that the “fear of death” does just what some “think” it is supposed to protect them from? This is because the “fear of death”, if you notice what it feels like to be consumed by it, it leaves one feeling terrified, paralyzed, confused, indecisive, drained of energy, weak willed, helpless and ultimately vulnerable to being maimed. In other words it sets one up “for” dying! Here I am reminded of a nurse working in my city in Canada during the SARS crisis. After she contracted and eventually became the first to succumb to the illness it was recounted how frightened she was before hand that she might have such a fate. In other words it has the potential to become a self fulfilling prophesy/fact. But, as I said, you probably thought the converse, didn’t you? Well then, which is the truth? Does it protect or does it harm? I will leave this for you to ponder. God’s Word tells us that His people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge, yet it also tells us how we can get knowledge. Jesus said, to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:31-32. Knowing is another way of saying having knowledge. If we abide in His Word Firstly, then secondly we shall know the truth, and then in that knowing the truth shall make us free. Jesus called this discipleship. Abiding in his Word, and knowing the truth, and being free because of it. Abiding is to continue there in.Do all Christians walk in freedom? The answer to that is assuredly No! Has this freedom been given to all Christians? The answer to that is assuredly Yes! Jesus was talking to the Jews, who believed Him but just because they believed him did not give them a free ride, He told them, the ones who believed, that they had to abide in his Word before they would know the truth. Many Christians who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior, dont know the truth of much of Gods Word. They lack knowledge concerning His promises. They dont know the truth or wont acknowledge it, therefore they havent been abiding in His Word, and therefore they cant be made free. Many people think you prove your faith by your works, — Ive seen people do all kinds of works, thinking that those works will prove their faith, yet many times all they have, is works without faith. This is not to say there shouldnt be corresponding action with our faith, but the works by themselves arent necessarily the result of faith. Faith will produce the works, but works will not produce the faith. I hope you see my point in this. So let us not get caught up in trying to produce faith by our works, it doesnt work that way, works must always be accompanied with faith. God’s Word will never fail, yet we have to come to a place where we have full confidence in his Word if we are ever going to walk in the knowledge of His truth, and experience the true freedom that comes from knowing the truth. This can only come from a confidence that is created in us from truly abiding in His precious promises. 2Pt:1:4: by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. We have a part to play in this, we have to partake. In order to do that we must walk in obedience and believe His Word to be true, this becomes easier as we draw closer to Him. Behind one door is a path that leads us closer to where we want to be, and the other door leads us in the other direction. When confronted with these choices, or doors, I would suggest there are three possible courses of action. Do Nothing By far the most popular choice, because it is the easiest. Change is difficult. Remember back to science class, where we learned Newtons laws of motions? The first law went something like this - objects at rest tend to stay at rest. The small Styrofoam floats used as strike indicators for flyfishing nymphs are ideal. Purchase a few floats that are1/4 inch to 3/8 inch in diameter. The purpose of the floatis to indicate when a trout takes the salmon egg. Beneath the float about 12 inches attach a very sharp hook.The first choice in hooks are the extremely sharp Gamatszuhook in size eight. If these are not available, Owner hooksare just as good. A distant third choice is the Eagle Claw Laser sharp brandof hooks. You may need some very small split shot weights if the lineon your spinning reel is larger than six pound test. If you need to add weight to the rig to cast it, place onevery small, 1/8 inch, split shot directly below the float. This will provide a little casting weight without killingthe natural action of the salmon egg. Salmon eggs are the first choice for bait. The bright red processed salmon eggs are found almost everywhere fishing supplies are sold in trout country. The GreenLabel Patzutkes brand are a favorite. These are usually lessthan 1/4 inch in diameter. Place two or three of thesesalmon eggs on the hook. It is not necessary to cover theentire length of the size 8 hook. The casting style is a “flip” of the bait into the water. Merely swing the bait with the bail open on your spinningreel or button held down on the spin cast reel. Control theline with your hand that does not hole the rod. This isexactly the same technique that bass fishermen call”flipping”. The casting distance is only a few feet atbest. Flip the float into the head of an eddy or just behind arock. Let the float be carried down stream until thecurrent straightens out your line and the salmon egg isforced to the top of the water. The strike is very subtle. When a trout takes a salmon egg, the float will quickly dipunder the water. This “dip” will happen quickly and thenthe float will surface and continue downstream as normal. Set the hook as soon as you see the “dip”. A lot of thetime you will have a trout hooked in the lip or the cornerof the mouth. The trout can be returned unharmed to thewater if you are practicing catch and release. At first, you may set the hook and simply pull the float andhook away with nothing. This is very common until youdevelop the “feel” for striking quickly. Set the hook atevery indication of a “dip” and you will be surprised at howmany trout you will hook. This method can be used with a fly. If you are fishing in a restricted “fly and lure only”water, replace the salmon eggs with a size 14 or 16 darkcolored nymph fly. The same technique is used to presentthe fly but the strike of the trout will be even slighterand quicker. You will have a lot more misses as the trouttake and reject the fly very quickly. The salmon egg makes them hold on a bit longer so that youhave time to react. ———————————————————— This method can produce a lot of trout for very littleoutlay of cash and time. You will be amazed at the number of trout you can hookstanding in one spot. If you fish quietly, a good feedingrun will produce several trout. Practice conservation please. By Ann Zuccardy Okay, it’s time to clear up the shortbread confusion once and for all. Today I went to a pot luck party. I brought tourtiere, a traditional French Canadian meat pie that my grandmother used to make. One guy said, “Aw man…you didn’t bring your sweetbreads!” To this I replied, “Nope, that would have been OFFAL!” No one got my play on words, but I was pretty pleased with myself. People call my product (shortbread) all kinds of things. Allow me to offer a brief explanation of the difference between sweetbreads, shortcake and shortbread so that next time you order, you’ll know what to ask for! Sweetbreads are animal innards. Often they are made from the thymus or pancreas of a piglet or calf. They have no relation to shortbread. I have tried sweetbreads at a fancy restaurant and found them pretty darn good.
